Enhancing Environmental Benefits in Brownfield Revitalization

Citation:

Mastervich, B. AND M. Harwell. Enhancing Environmental Benefits in Brownfield Revitalization. N/A, N/A, OR, December 01, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

This communications flyer describes examples of easy, current approaches to enhance environmental benefits (ecosystem services) of brownfields cleanups using nature-based design elements. This work is related to StRAP 3 (SHC.9.2.3 Translational Ecosystem Services) and is an optional Sub-Product in StRAP 4 (SHC.410.2.14.3, "Advancing Ecosystem Services Concepts to Enhance Environmental Benefits of Brownfield Cleanups").

Description:

An important goal in revitalizing brownfield sites is to reduce environmental and community health hazards at contaminated sites and support sustainable and efficient redevelopment opportunities. New approaches are creating opportunities to enhance the benefits of cleanups. As cleanups move from gray design to Nature-based solutions, the incorporation of nature-based design elements has become popular. A brownfield restoration allows important opportunities to enhance the local community and provide both economic and environmental benefits. One example of enhancing environmental benefits is using nature-based design elements. Popular approaches range from rain gardens to permeable pavements to green spaces and the use of green infrastructure as part of the remediation work. This flyer describes examples of easy, current approaches to enhance environmental benefits.
